Trip Overview
If you are a music lover and a lover of history …this trip’s for you! Cuba is the country where music is heard everywhere. Immerse
yourself for several days in this amazing world. These 11 days, 10 night’s trip will introduce you to the Cuban people, their history,
land and culture through a series of educational lectures, programs and performances, visits to museums, historic sites, and talks by
experts. The group will explore Old and Modern Cuba and much more. We will travel from Havana to Cayo Santa Maria, Santiago
de Cuba and end our journey in Holguin.
Days 1 – 3 Arrive in Havana you will not only explore Old and Modern Havana, you will speak with the artists and musicians about
the history of Havana and the music. You will also meet and speak with local artists and historians and in the evenings enjoy their
work at the Havana Jazz Festival.
Days 4 We will depart for a day in Las Terrazas. A small community and nature reserve in the municipality of Candelaria, Artemisa
Province, Cuba. It is located in the Sierra del Rosario mountains, which was designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1984.
Days 5 We depart to Cayo Santa Maria for a day of relaxation and visit community projects on the way from Havana.
Day 6 –9 We continue our journey by land to Santiago de Cuba and stay for a couple of days and learn about the Southeastern
part of the island of Cuba. It has long been the second most important city on the island after Havana, and still remains the second
largest). History, History, History is what you will learn here in Santiago from our historian and educator about the African’s history
roots in the diaspora, and visit Casa Del Caribe for a briefing on the City’s history. Visit to the Morro Castle, historic monuments,
and the cultural and artist’s centers.
Days 9 – 11 Last stop will be in Holguin considered by some as the birthplace of Cuban music, named after the Spanish
conquistador Don Francisco Garcia Holguin. The nation’s fourth-largest city serves up authentic provincial Cuba without the
wrapping paper. Though the city of San Isidoro de Holguín barely features in Cuba’s tourist master plan, there’s magic and mystery
here for a certain type of traveler. We will learn from experts and engage in conversations about this city.
About the Jazz Festival
The Havana Jazz Festival was born in 1978 when Bobby Carcasses, and other well-known Cuban Jazz musicians, presented the
first Jazz concert at the Casa de la Cultura de Plaza in downtown Havana. Based on this success, another Jazz festival was
organized the following year, featuring pianist Chucho Valdes, one of Cuba’s legendary pianist. Renowned artists such as Dizzy
Gillespie, Max Roach, Charlie Haden, Roy Hargrove, Jack DeJohnette, and Danilo Perez became part of the Havana scene on a
regular basis. In 1996 Chucho Valdes became artistic director of the Havana Intentional Jazz Plaza Festival and president of the
Organizing Committee with Alexis Vazquez Aguilera as the vice president. The festival has since expanded to include all the main
concert halls in downtown Havana, not to mention impromptu street jam sessions along el Malecón.
