Cradle of Humankind Tour

The Cradle of Humankind is one of eight World Heritage Sites in South Africa, and the only one in

Gauteng. It is widely recognised as the place from which all of humankind originated.

The 47 000-hectare site has unearthed the best evidence of the complex journey which our species

has taken to make us what we are – a place of pilgrimage for all humankind. It is not only a place of

ongoing scientific discovery into our origins, but also a place of contemplation – a place that allows us

to reflect on who we are, where we come from and where we are going to-

Soweto & Apartheid Museum Tour (includes Lunch)

Travel to Soweto (South Western Township), the largest black residential area in South Africa; see a

fascinating contrast to Sandton and Rosebank in the Northeast. This “city within a city” consists of 50

suburbs.

In many ways, the story of Soweto is the story of South Africa. Soweto rose to the world stage on June

16, 1976 when mass protests (known as the Soweto Uprising) broke out over the government’s

decision to enforce education in Africaans rather than in English. The police fired on thousands of

students who were marching to Orlando Stadium (in Orlando West), killing 566 people.

(tour includes Freedom Square, drive-by Regina Mundi Church, Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital,

Baragwaneth taxi rank, visit the Hector Peterson Memorial.

The Apartheid Museum, the first of its kind, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid, the racially

prejudiced system that blighted much of its progress and the triumph of reason which crowned half a

century of struggle. The Museum is the story of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity. The

Museum has been assembled and organized by a multi-disciplinary team of curators, film-makers,

historians and designers.

It is a superb example of design, space and landscape offering the international community a unique

South African experience. For anyone wanting to understand and experience what South Africa was

really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental.

12:30 PM - South Africa Standard Time

Lunch at Chez Alina

Tucked away on a residential street in what appears to be a large converted garage. The cool shady

interior, colourfully decorated with orange walls, plants and local artefacts, is a welcoming affair and

brings respite from the South African heat.

When the magic words 'lunch is ready' are announced. It's an informal serve yourself buffet that befits

the laidback dining experience at Alina's. Five deliciously different salads are on offer, from mixed

beans to sweet tomato and onion. In this heat, that's usually more than enough but not after spotting

the hot buffet. The scent of curry wafting over is too tempting to resist. As we load our plates with pap,

also known as phutu, (a sort of porridge made from mielie-meal, usually ground maize) and top it off

with potjiekos (African meat and vegetable stew) and Mrs Ball's Chutney, we know that dinner just

won't be necessary. *

District Six Museum & Greenmarket Square

District Six was named the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town in 1867. Originally established as a

mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants,

District Six was a vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port. By the beginning of the

twentieth century, however, the process of removals and marginalisation had begun.

The first to be forced out were black South Africans who were displaced from the District in 1901. As

the more prosperous moved away to the suburbs, the area became a neglected ward of the city.

On 11 February 1966 it was declared a white area under the Group Areas Act of 1950, and by 1982,

the life of the community was over. More than 60 000 people were forcibly removed to barren outlying

areas aptly known as the Cape Flats, and their houses in District Six were flattened by bulldozers.

The District Six Museum, established in December 1994, works with the memories of the District Six

experience and with that of forced removals more generally.

Created in 1696, Greenmarket Square is the second oldest public site in Cape Town (after the

Grand Parade).

The square itself was originally used as a slave market and as a market for fruit and vegetables. After

a period spent as a car park , the square has been returned to its original function as a market place.

Today the square is a regular stop on the tourist itinerary, as the market sells tourist memorabilia from

across Africa.
